Bay Shore Hotel Beach & Resort

                       Bay Shore Hotel Beach & Resort

In 1898, a bookkeeper at Hampton Institute, now known as Hampton University, got an idea to create a beachfront escape for Black people in the region. That place became the popular resort known as Bay Shore Beach. Bay Shore was adjacent to Buckroe Beach and operated as a holiday destination for thousands of Black beachgoers for many decades. 

The beach was one of the most popular resort and vacation destinations in the Mid-Atlantic region for African Americans. Besides standard beach activities, hotels, and restaurants, Bay Shore also had an amusement park. The beach was in its prime of popularity from 1898 until 1933 when a Hurricane devastated the coast. Both "sides" of the beach, (Bay Shore & Buckroe) were respectively rebuilt, however, Bay Shore may not have been built back to its former heights, although it remained popular. 

Bay Shore was a place that entertained thousands of people every summer, that drew the greatest entertainers from around the country. Bay Shore was a beach that had the clearest water. You could actually see to the bottom. Bay Shore had lifeguards, and even though the story at the time was that Black people could not swim, we had lifeguards. So if we couldn't swim, we still had someone to save our lives.

Begun as a small four-room cottage, by 1925 the hotel had expanded to seventy rooms with an associated amusement park, pavilion, and pier. African Americans flocked to this beachfront resort from several states away. The C&O railway ran a line to Buckroe Beach during the summers until World War II. Churches throughout Virginia had regular summer outings to Buckroe Beach. The Bay Shore Hotel was listed in The Green Book from 1947 to 1958 & again from 1962 to 1964 and 1966 to 1967. Ironically, the all-white Buckroe Beach Amusement Park sat adjacent to the Bay Shore Beach Resort, separated only by a fence that stretched across the beach into the water. Performers at the resort included Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Redd Foxx.

Bay Shore's pavilion and hotel structure were on the Chitlin circuit. So many of the artists that you and I might have grown up watching actually visited there. The best part was not only did they visit and play there, but they could stay there and go through the front door. So they didn't have to worry about none of that, "Well, you know, you can play here, but you can't stay here." They could stay there and they can enjoy the food there. Ella Fitzgerald grew up in Newport News. There was Pearl Bailey, who also grew up in Newport News. There was Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, James Brown, Martha and the Vandellas, Sam Cook, and Otis Redding. It's just too numerous to mention how many stars came to Bay Shore Pavillion.

There actually used to be a fence in the water to separate the races. They had a fence that ran from the shoreline all the way into the deepest end of the Chesapeake Bay so that Black people stayed on their side and white people stayed on their side. It's amazing to me that you would have a fence in the water.

Why is the West divided over Palestinian statehood?

Despite talk of two states, historian Yazid Sayigh says the US has no real plans leading to Palestinian independence.

More Western states are recognising Palestine, but as long as the US opposes Palestinian independence and sovereignty, “things will get worse for all of us”, says Yezid Sayigh, senior fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Center.

Sayigh tells host Steve Clemons that the United States is lobbying for “day-after” plans in Gaza that “set the stage for future violence” because they don’t lead to statehood.

Despite international pressure and a global solidarity movement supporting Palestine, the former Palestinian negotiator argues, the Palestinian national movement is not coalescing, and Palestinians are “leaderless” on the world stage.

We have digressed as a nation. Once upon a time we had our differences, yet, for the most part, at the end of the day we took comfort in knowing we were a “Democratic Republic.” Our rights are codified and protected by a system of “checks and Balances.” Imperfect as it may be, we have hope. Today, 74 percent of the Republican Party thinks it’s O.K. For tRump to be a dictator “just for a day.” No dictator surrenders power once they get it. Trump wants to fire federal employees and replace them with people who are more loyal to him than to the country. He wants to do away with the FBI and take full control of the Justice Department, including firing any Attorney General (or any jurist) who doesn’t do what he says. He wants to give police, “Absolute Immunity.” Does this scare anyone? He will dismantle our educational system and go after journalists who are not favorable to him. Essentially, eliminated all systems of checks and balances, giving himself authoritarian rule, with all immunity. How can anyone not see the Nazi playbook verbatim? And - Trump is a court-proven fraudster, the serial sexual abuser (molester and rapist), who had over two thousand cases before his ever running for president, who paid to create fake news stories on his rivals and squash news that exposed him.                       Support Israel and Look Bad

  Israel is trying to force Iran to attack them back in hopes of making the USA stay at war with Israel against the Palestinian people and Iran. The leaders of the USA are being forced to say dumb things to support Israel and look bad to the rest of the world. 

    Netanyahu is trying to stay in control and his only hope for power in Israel is to stay at war. He wants the war, he needs the war or he will lose control in Israel.

    The US government is losing at home and around the world and letting Israel destroy democracy in the Middle East and here in the USA. The USA must stop being a part of this war.

    If you believe in God you must do something to stop the slaughter in Israel, over 34,000 are dead and hundreds of thousands are near death. Israel has destroyed the water system in GAZA, there are no hospitals left for the sick, Israel destroyed them all, and there are a few roads Israel destroyed all they could. 

    There is very little food for the people, Israel is blocking roads and the people are dying.    

        Israel is doing to the Palestinians what Hitler did to the Jews in Europe....!

It is interesting to realize that African Americans have been at the beginning or forefront of what is now known as Country Music, when they began by creating and singing soul-searching songs during slavery by singing out their thoughts, feelings, and misery in their musical thoughts accompanied by a musical instrument known as the banjo, which originated as an African musical instrument. These songs have a history which is known and recognizable through being passed down from generation to generation and taught knowingly or unknowingly to the white slavers or eventually other country whites who eventually became country artists. This is a historical fact which can be traced back to the past. That's what makes this informative casual conversational study so important and teachable. Take a look and give a listen to this fine study and share the information with family, friends or others to help set the record straight. Perhaps then the society of today may become more knowledgeable about Black achievements and understand how and why someone like Beyonce can choose to boldly make their entrance into the genre at any place and time she chooses.
