Thank you, Rhonda, for voicing your opinion about the Michelle Obama comment that found disfavor with the media and other pundits. My God! Isn't the woman entitled to her honest opinion whether she is the prospective First Lady of the country or not? This is not only her God-given right, but in fact I entirely AGREE WITH HER! Even though I force myself to retain LOVE FOR MY NATIVE LAND, I believe I not only have the right but am DUTY-BOUND to be highly critical of it in the name of TRUTH AND JUSTICE.

Your and your family experiences can be multiplied untold by millions of African-Americans all across this country, end upon end, century upon century. Each family has its own horror story to reveal. Thank you for sharing yours. It only goes to remind us of the common realities we as a people share -- which the majority population does not even have an inkling remains a factor in our everyday existence. They can't really relate. What is more, the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (government)has done so very many things that I as an ethical and Christian person am opposed to that I have no choice but to vent my real feelings, as did Michelle. All the recent wars and war mongering, capitalistic greed, neglect of environmental imperatives, FBI/CIA/POLICE STATE injustices occurring consistently, the Injustice Court and Penal System, the Great Gas Rape political and legislative protectorates, lack of concern for the impoverished, medical care neglect and abuse for the poor and elderly, etc., leave me the most ashamed of my country than I have ever been before in my lifetime and in recent history. Why should anyone have to lie about it or pretend to overlook it. If we truly still have love for our country -- like a mother for a wayward child -- we have the responsibility to keep loving it while we keep trying to deliver it to see the light and come to a higher point of righteousness. Besides, Michelle added the qualifier "very" which assumes that there might have also been other moments of high regard, but this one is the penultimate. Long live Michelle and long live her unfettered comments. Friends, Americans and Countrymen, remove the "Shackles" so Michelle's words can "Dance." [Just ask Mary Mary about how liberating that is!] More Power to you, Michelle, speak your mind all the time, Future

The meat of the matter

The labor movement's future might hang on what happens at this
giant packing plant near the tiny town of Tar Heel.
By Frank Maley

With union membership continuing its long decline and representation of the U.S. work force dwindling — from 23% in 1983 to 13% in 2007 — the labor movement needs a big win. There would be no sweeter place to get it than North Carolina, the least unionized state in the nation. “This is one of the largest industrial plants in the South,” says Robert Korstad, associate professor of public policy studies and history at Duke University. “It’s symbolic to the union movement. If they’re able to win there, it sends a real signal to other workers in other industries.”

For Smithfield, a union in Tar Heel could expose the Achilles’ heel of the business model that made the company the world’s largest hog producer and pork processor. “They figure if they can get that done, it will be a catapult into other industry in North Carolina and South Carolina,” says Joe Luter IV, president of The Smithfield Packing Co., the subsidiary that runs the plant. “Then they’ll move on down the Southeast into Georgia, Alabama, etcetera.”

“If the labor movement can’t win the South, we can’t succeed,” Gene Bruskin, director of the union campaign, told Labor Notes magazine, adding: “The Tar Heel plant is big enough and important enough and close enough to other places that it has the possibility of moving other people. The possibilities of organizing packinghouse workers would be transformative to the labor movement, for immigrants, for African American workers, for the South.”

The UFCW has been trying to organize the Tar Heel plant since 1992, the year it opened. There have been longer campaigns in North Carolina and a few that involved more workers, says James Andrews, president of the state AFL-CIO in Raleigh. “But at least in recent history, I can’t think of a worse situation.” Hourly employees twice have voted on whether the union would represent them, and twice the union has lost. It claims the company won by coercion — charges backed by a court decision and the National Labor Relations Board, which has ordered a new election.

Working for Obama in Altadena,Ca

As did many Americans, these Altadena citizens spent last Sunday raising money for Barack Obama's campaign as part of a nationwide bake sale. I heard about it through MoveOn.org and went to check it out.

It was over 100 degrees out, but that didn't dampen the spirits of these neighbors. You could pay what you wanted to, and I got chocolate chip cookies, cranberry bread and a bumper sticker for $40. I call it a bargain.
Small groups and small donations like mine have put Obama where he is. This bunch started at high noon and planned to stay until 4:00. By the time I got there at about 1:15 they'd already collected a fat wad of money. Hope was high and there was talk of Obama as "our president."
*****
In posting this I devoured the last chocolate chip cookie and thought, "maybe I should give equal time, go find a McCain event to post about." And it struck me that if you read Pasadena Daily Photo, by the very nature of blogging you're going to get my view and only my view of Pasadena.

There are a lot of blogs in Pasadena. They cover all kinds of subjects: food, politics, homemaking, the arts, you name it. I hope if you want to know about Pasadena you'll read them. But I suggest you begin with Pasadena's other daily photo blog, Ben Wideman's The Sky is Big in Pasadena. I don't know Ben's politics, but he and I are different people. He's relatively new to southern California, he sometimes posts from far afield, he's younger than I am, and he's a guy, so right off the bat you're going to get a different point of view. Plus it's a darned good blog. So there ya go.

Meet Michelle Obama

Michelle Robinson was born in Chicago, Illinois to Frasier Robinson (who died in 1990), a city water plant employee and Democratic precinct captain, and Marian Robinson, a secretary at Spiegel's catalog store. She grew up in the South Shore community area of Chicago, and was raised in a conventional two-parent home where the family convened around the dinner table nightly. She and her brother, Craig (who is 16 months older), skipped the second grade. Michelle mostly traces her roots to pre-revolutionary African Americans in the American South, much of her family still resides in the state of South Carolina. Michelle graduated from Whitney Young High School in 1981 and went on to major in sociology and minor in African American studies at Princeton University, where she graduated cum laude with an A.B. in 1985.

At Princeton, she challenged the teaching methodology for French because she felt that it should be more conversational. As part of her requirements for graduation, she wrote a thesis entitled, "Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community." Her brother Craig was the fourth leading scorer in Princeton University's men's basketball history, and is both a former Brown University's men's basketball coach and the current Oregon State Beavers men's basketball coach. She obtained her J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1988. While at Harvard, she participated in political demonstrations advocating the hiring of professors who are minorities.

She met Barack Obama when they were the only two African Americans at their law firm and she was assigned to mentor him while he was a summer associate. Their relationship started with a business lunch and then a community organization meeting where he first impressed her. The couple's first date was to the Spike Lee movie Do the Right Thing. The couple married in October 1992, and they have two daughters, Malia Ann (born 1998) and Natasha (known as Sasha) (born 2001). Throughout the campaign she has made a "commitment to be away overnight only once a week — to campaign only two days a week and be home by the end of the second day" for their two children .

She once requested that Barack, who was then her fiancĂ©, meet her prospective boss when considering her first career move. Now, she is her husband’s closest adviser. Early in the presidential race she did not portray herself as an adviser, however. In fact, she was quoted in interviews saying "My job is not a senior adviser."

She held public sector positions in the Chicago city government as an Assistant to the Mayor and Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development. In 1993, she became Executive Director for the Chicago office of Public Allies, a non-profit organization encouraging young people to work on social issues in nonprofit groups and government agencies. In 1996, Mrs. Obama served as the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago, where she developed the University's Community Service Center. In 2002, she began working for the University of Chicago Hospitals, first as executive director for community affairs and, beginning May, 2005, as Vice President for Community and External Affairs. She still holds the position, though is working part time in order to devote more time to being a mother.

With the ascent of her husband as a prominent national politician, she has become a part of pop culture. In May 2006, Essence magazine listed her among "25 of the World's Most Inspiring Women." In July 2007, Vanity Fair magazine listed her among " World's Best Dressed People." In September 2007, Harvard University magazine listed her 58th of "The Harvard 100," a list of the prior year's most influential Harvard alumni. Her husband was ranked fourth.

She served as a salaried board member of TreeHouse Foods, Inc. , a major Wal-Mart supplier with whom she cut ties immediately after her husband made comments critical of Wal-Mart at an AFL-CIO forum in Trenton, New Jersey, on May 14, 2007. She serves on the board of directors of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

According to the couple’s 2006 income tax return, Michelle's salary was $273,618 from the University of Chicago Hospitals, while he had a salary of $157,082 from the United States Senate. The total Obama income, however, was $991,296 including $51,200 she earned as a member of the board of directors of TreeHouse Foods, plus investments and royalties from his books.
