Evil Natures of Man Revealed in Political Campaigns / BPpost by Pax4evr

Is there anyone out there who is as sick of the negative, unfair, and heinous campaigning tactics that are being exposed through the political maneuverings of the main two political parties. The maliciousness elicited hate baiting among the general populous that has hardly been seen with such vengeance and depth in decades. It is indicative of an inhumane and non-conscience-filled society that is bereft of true Christian and/or higher level thought processes, and this state of the world is heart-breaking to say the least, non-empowering to say the most, and non-transcending to say the best. It is so disillusioning that the Faithful must needs resort to the Power of Prayer to seek intervention in a world being led astray. I offer the subsequent words and invite others to follow in their own will and way:

Great, Creator King, Supreme Being of the Universe and My Heart --

Lord, we implore you to infuse us with your vigilance, as well as the resilience needed to withstand the cruelties and evil mongering of the ill-wrought minds within this world. Father, we need you to stand by us and lead us in the Way Everlasting so that we might learn from Thee how to make our impact felt upon the wiles of this world. Master, we look at all the maliciousness that is being spewed about in the current political campaigns, where men and women are basing their opinions on false and twisted words, images, and purposes of one group over another without regard for truth, decency, or righteousness. Their only purpose is self-seeking, purveying with evil intent, greed, and false patriotism. Lord, they call your name and do not even really know you nor your word. They distort the reality of your purpose and call it valid. But You, Lord, know them in their destitute wickedness. Father, I pray that you will teach us how to save ourselves so that Your Blessed Will will truly be done. Show us how to stand up against this impending danger not only to our own country, but to the world, and for the history of the earth as we know it. Forgive us our transgressions whether personal or national, and open our eyes to the Way Everlasting. In the name of the Christ our Redeemer. Amen.

Prayer For Obama, A Man of Conviction -- BP post by Pax4evr

My Friends, if there is anyone in this world at this point in time who needs corporate prayer, it is the candidate running for presidency of the USA, Senator Barak Obama... Although I was previously inclined toward a personal rationale for nonalignment with his aim, the unfairness that he has been subjected to has forced me to support counteractions to help level the "playing field." It seems only right that no man should be convicted of words uttered by someone else -- yet Obama has been so convicted. In the Land of the Free, why should the freedom of association be taken away from someone just because he is aspiring to the highest political office in the land? Yet for Obama, this has happened. The gross unfairness of it all is alarming and cuts deeply. It seems as if detractors could not find enough "dirt" in the candidate's life, so they have to smear him with someone else's. Thus, we as a nation truly need prayer to prevent this evil from pervading our minds and come against what God would have in store for our country so it can be a source of true Goodness and Righteousness of its Creeds: Not as exhibited in the feigned religiosity of the current administration -- if he actually posses the mentality to distinguish the difference -- a pathetic "cross" the country has had to bear for eight years. To relieve us from this bondage, the following petition is raised, while others of like minds are invited to add your own thoughts:


Supreme Master of the Universe, God of our Fathers and Mankind,

We beseech Thee this day to come into our lives and fulfill your true Aim for this World. Father you have directed one such of your servants to seek the nomination for leadership of this United States of America. He has been beset upon all sides with the types of persecutions that have been suffered by your very Son. I detect the same viciousness that was aimed against Jesus, Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandi, the Prophet Jeremiah of the Scriptures, and any of your Leaders sent into this Life to help bring forth your Kingdom here on earth. Lord, I look at the repeatedly straying Israelites of the Old Testament, the Inquisitor Catholics of the Middle Ages, the Puritans of the recent Past, and the Religious Right of the Present and find that history keeps repeating itself with evilness in the hearts where these people malign your Great Purpose. It forces me to ponder: When do these people ever learn? Lord, as Saint Frances of Assisi, let me ask: Lord, please help me become an Instrument of Thy Peace to contradict the evil of the world.

In this vein I pray your protection on Barak Obama, a good man, who wants to lead this country into Thy Righteousness -- not the misthinking on the Political Right. Father, I can see your Hand upon his mandate for the Great Freedoms that this Country was designed to purvey. I can see your Face in his ability to attract people of many faiths, many cultures, and many countries into a Movement of Brotherhood. I can detect your Strength in his tendency for intergenerational, interracial, and international appeal. I can feel Your Love in the generosity, altruism, and dedication behind his smile and his charismatic mannerisms. I see Your Guidance in the articulation of his intellect. Now, father, I ask that you bless him, sustain, him, renew and invigorate him; bless his helpmate, his children, and all sides of his family and friends. Dear Master, please extend your Care and Courageousness to his followers, his planners, and political advisers. Lord, lead us all in the Path of Righteousness for His Name's Sake. And Father, though we all walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, let us all fear no evil. For Thou, Lord, please stay with Him and shall lead us all to the Life Everlasting. Amen!!.

NATIONAL BOYCOTT(May19-23)

Hi Everyone,
Hope that this e-mail reaches you in good health and spirits. There are approximately 23 days left to the NATIONAL BOYCOTT(May19-23). As many of you may know, the NYPD detectives in the Sean Bell murder trial were acquitted on all charges. The judge in the case had made his decision based on the fact that the demeanor and background of Mr. Bell and his friends had warranted the detectives to shoot over 50 times. This judicial decision cannot go unanswered. Go back to the 80's with the death of Micheal Stewart and Eleanor bumpers to name a few. Go back even further to a time when it was legal to lynch African Americans. For too long we have sat idlely by while we let the "establishment" shoot our leaders(Malcolm/Martin/Medgar) and our young black/hispanic men(Stewart/Baez/Bell) and have done NOTHING about it.



Now is the time to move to action. We must make this stand because if we do not, they will continue to just kill our leaders and young men when it suits them knowing they will not be held to the same judicial consequences as the average citizens. We can no longer turn a blind eye, because it may happen to us. The only thing that the establishment understands is the almighty dollar.



So remember, do all necessary shopping prior to the MAY 19th (May17 & 18). Buy no gas; fill up before. Do grocery shopping before. Carpool to work, if possible ride a bike or walk to work. Bring bagged lunch to work or leftovers.Spend not one penny that week. Make a donation of at least $5.00 to a Black/Hispanic organization. God Bless. PLEASE PASS THIS ON.

"United we stand, devided we fall!" We've all heard that phrase. It is best remembered as being said by Patrick Henry, but it goes back a lot farther than he. It was first coined by Aesop the Greek Phylosopher. Now that goes to show you just how long ago that concept was realised. Yet, it seems that it is still not understood to this very day! It is such a simple, yet powerful concept, so why is this so? Many of our Peoples leaders knew of it. They did their level best to get others to understand. Perhaps the best known for doing so was the Shawana ( Shawnee) leader Techumseh. He spent much of his life attempting to rally disparate Native American tribes in a mutual defense of their lands, which eventually led to his death in the War of 1812. But saddly, few listened. Why??? For the same reasons they still do so till this very day. Because there are those who don't want us united. Devided it is much easier to keep us confused and on their leashes like tame dogs. Much easier to keep us under their control. It's not so hard to see who these people are, though many hide behind lies. Their actions show their true selves. One of the most obvious is the same government that claims us as just so much booty from war and just a thorn in their sides. Some are buisness men getting rich at our exspense. That's nothing new to us, but the others are truly the worse. They are many of our own leaders, our own council members, our own blood! They do so for greed of money and power. They could care less about the welfare of our land, our traditions, or of ourselves. They do their best to silence any voice that speaks against them. They use lies, and if need be force, to get what it is that they wish. They do so without fear simply because they can. They have more power and money than the few who try to exspose and stop them. Many know this and fear them, so they don't even try, and all suffer as the result. Yet we have the most powerful weapon imaginable to defeat them, the most powerful weapon to solve all of our peoples problems of any kind, right here available at our disposal. That weapon is UNITY! The power of our numbers! Imagine if we put that weapon to use. Imagine if we were not just united as a tribe. Not just united as a Nation. Imagine if we were united as THE PEOPLE! A to Z, all of our Nations together! Petty differances tossed aside. Sell outs forced out of power and replaced by those who truly care. Our numbers working towards solutions and better lives for all. In the words of John Lennon, "IMAGINE".

REV. JEREMIAH A. WRIGHT, JR.: Pastor inspires Obama's 'audacity'

When he took over Trinity United Church of Christ in 1972, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. was a maverick pastor with a wardrobe of dashikis and a militant message.

Six years later, he planted a "Free South Africa" sign on the lawn of his church and asked other local religious leaders to follow his lead.

None took him up on the invitation.

The sign stayed until the end of apartheid, --long enough to catch the eye of a young Barack Obama, who visited the church in 1985 as a community activist. Obama, was not a churchgoer at the time, but he found himself returning to the sanctuary of Trinity United. In Wright he had found both a spiritual mentor and a role model.

Wright, 65, is a straight-talking pragmatist who arrived in Chicago as an outsider and became an institution. He has built a congregation of 8,500, including the likes of Oprah Winfrey and hip-hop artist Common, by offering an alternative to socially conservative black churches that are, Wright believes, too closely tied to Chicago's political dynasties.

Obama, too, also came to the city as a young unknown. Emerging from relative obscurity with his win in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary race for a U.S. Senate seat, he found a growing audience by preaching the politics of social justice and common ground. He has encouraged Democrats to acknowledge the power of faith in the lives of Americans. Now, he is positioning himself as a presidential candidate who can unify the American people.

Obama says that rather than advising him on strategy, Wright helps keep his priorities straight and his moral compass calibrated.

"What I value most about Pastor Wright is not his day-to-day political advice," Obama said. "He's much more of a sounding board for me to make sure that I am speaking as truthfully about what I believe as possible and that I'm not losing myself in some of the hype and hoopla and stress that's involved in national politics."

The congregation on 95th Street, then numbering just 87, had recently adopted the motto "Unashamedly black and unapologetically Christian." They did not mind his fiery red Afro and black power agenda.

Wright has continued on an independent path ever since, often questioning the common sense of Scripture, objecting to mandatory prayer in schools and clashing with clergy who preach prosperity theology, a popular notion among black pastors that God will bestow wealth and success on believers.

In the process, he built a spiritual empire. The modest brown brick building that housed the church in the 1970s was converted into a day-care center when Trinity opened its new sanctuary in 1995 at 400 W. 95th St. Members run more than 80 ministries, including an outreach to gay and lesbian singles, --also unusual for a black church.

And though Wright now wears three-piece suits on occasion, but he still dons a dashiki most times he preaches. Obama has said he is particularly inspired by Wright's ability to draw followers from all walks of life--celebrities and welfare recipients, PhDs and GEDs. It is a gift the senator aspires to emulate.

Wright again bucked convention by announcing plans to retire in May 2008 and tapping Rev. Otis Moss III as his successor. Many black pastors do not surrender their pulpit even when they become too feeble to serve, said Rev. Dwight Hopkins, a professor at the University of Chicago Divinity School who met Wright in the 1980s.

Wright's willingness to "surrender leadership" demonstrates a humility that sets him apart, Hopkins said.

"The black church is probably the only space in America where black men can have unquestioned authority," he said. "It's hard to give that up for a lot of black male pastors."

Wright said the decision was not hard difficult. "The church is built around the personality of Jesus, not Jeremiah Wright," he said.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Wright followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and enrolled at by attending Virginia Union University, with the intention of doing graduate work at the historically black seminary. But disenchanted by what he felt was an inadequate Christian response to the civil rights movement, he abruptly ended his pastoral pursuits and joined the U.S. Navy.

An encounter with a pastor as he loitered on some church steps reminded Wright of his calling. He eventually returned to Howard University to finish bachelor's and master's degrees in English with a focus on African spirituals. At the University of Chicago Divinity School, he earned another master's in the history of religions with a focus on Islam. He planned to earn a doctoral degree his Ph.D. and teach at a seminary.

But his calling to teach was interrupted by a call to action. Many black Christians were leaving the church for other religious traditions, including the Black Hebrew Israelites and the Nation of Islam, who taught that Christianity was a white man's religion imposed on them by slaveholders.

"They didn't know African-American history," Wright said. "They were leaving the churches by the boatloads ¡K The church seemed so disconnected from their struggle for dignity and humanity."

Wright set out to show young people how other major religions also participated in the slave trade, how many abolitionists were Christians and how Jesus' concern for the oppressed related to the struggles of the black community.

To do that, he needed a pulpit and found one at Trinity, which needed a leader to match its new motto and new attitude.

"Many of us who had grown up in very traditional denominations were all transformed by the civil rights movement and were beginning to question how our faith intersected with our actions," said longtime Trinity member Iva Carruthers, who is helping Wright launch a church grammar school.

Wright sought to build on the black theology of liberation introduced in 1968 by Rev. James Cone of New York, by emphasizing Africa's contribution to Christianity rather than that of mainstream white theologians.

"To show there is an independent form of thinking there about religion that stands on its own, that's really more life-giving than what you get from Europe," Cone said. "Black people who come from that approach have a very healthy understanding of who they are."

To bolster that pride, Wright takes members of his flock to different African nations every year. Wright also encourages youths in the congregation to attend historically black colleges and universities, sponsoring a scholarship fair each year.

The success of Trinity did not come without sacrifice.

"Growing up in the church was kind of bittersweet," said Wright's daughter Jeri, who developed a church publication into the nationally distributed Trumpet magazine. "That's when his daily life consisted of his service to God's people. I've always loved going to church and going to worship. At the same time I felt my church took my father from me."

She credits her mother, Janet, for helping her understand.

"It was my mother that taught us to separate the man from the ministry," his daughter said. "No matter what happened in our lives, she never wanted us to have any ill feelings toward the church or toward our father. `Yes, he is your father, but when he steps behind that sacred desk he is God's messenger, and never confuse the two.'ƒ|"

It was a harder lesson to live. Janet and Jeremiah Wright eventually divorced, --which the pastor describes as his greatest failure. He has since remarried and had another daughter, Jamila, and with his wife, Ramah, he sees a counselor regularly.

He hides none of this from his congregation, despite the persistent whispering since his divorce.

"He's not a hypocrite," Hopkins said. "You know what he says behind closed doors, he'll say in the pulpit."

"People expect him to be God. They expect him to be Jesus," said Jeri Wright said. "The reality is, he's human. He has the same hurt, the same pains, the same issues as those that come and sit under the sound of his voice every Sunday." That dose of reality is what keeps Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr., known in the to hip-hop world as Common, coming back to Trinity.

"That's one of the greatest attributes I love about him," said Common, who grew up in the church. "He falls victim to the same things ¡K He brings balance to the pulpit. He didn't just create an image."

In his 1993 memoir "Dreams from My Father," Obama recounts in vivid detail his first meeting with Wright in 1985. The pastor warned the community activist that getting involved with Trinity might turn off other black clergy because of the church's radical reputation.

When Obama sought his own church community, he felt increasingly at home at Trinity. Before leaving for Harvard Law School in 1988, he responded to one of Wright's altar calls and declared a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Later he would base his 2004 keynote speech to the Democratic National Convention on a Wright sermon called "Audacity to Hope," --also the inspiration for Obama's second memoir, "The Audacity of Hope."

Though Wright and Obama do not often talk one-on-one often, the senator does check with his pastor before making any bold political moves.

Last fall, Obama approached Wright to broach the possibility of running for president. Wright cautioned Obama not to let politics change him, but he also encouraged Obama, win or lose.

Wright said, "Picture some kid who lives in Hyde Park or over in Ida B. Wells Homes or Washington Gardens, who will see Barack and say, `My God, I can be one day be that.' The amount of hope that it will give to kids who society has written off just in terms of them changing their concept of what is possible is going to be immeasurable for generations to come." ƒ| mbrachear@tribune.com
